How to Connect VoIP Phone Systems to GoHighLevel: Complete 2026 Guide

Last updated: September 2026

Business phone systems used to live in a completely separate world from the CRM.

A customer would call through RingCentral, TELUS Business Connect, 8x8, Dialpad, Ooma, Bell, Rogers or another VoIP provider. A salesperson might then manually add notes to the CRM, send a separate email, update a pipeline and hope someone remembered the follow-up.

That separation creates a simple problem: the conversation happens in one system while the customer relationship lives somewhere else.

GoHighLevel changes that model by bringing calling, CRM activity, SMS, workflows, calendars, Voice AI and — for supported configurations — physical SIP deskphones into a more connected environment.

Key takeaway
Connecting an existing VoIP provider to GoHighLevel does not always mean that provider becomes the native HighLevel phone carrier. Depending on your setup, you may use call forwarding, an existing number for outbound calls, hosted messaging, APIs/webhooks, direct SIP deskphones, or a full number port.

This guide explains what each approach means, what can and cannot be integrated, and how to choose the right setup for your business.

What Is GoHighLevel VoIP Integration?

A GoHighLevel VoIP integration connects some or all of your business calling environment with HighLevel.

Depending on the setup, this can allow your business to:

  • Make outbound calls from the CRM
  • Receive incoming business calls
  • Route calls between users or departments
  • Use compatible physical VoIP deskphones
  • Record and transcribe calls
  • Route calls through an IVR
  • Use Voice AI as a primary or backup call handler
  • Trigger workflows after a call
  • Send automated SMS or email follow-ups
  • Track conversations against the customer record
  • Book appointments
  • Keep an existing business number during migration
  • Port an existing number into HighLevel

The most useful question is therefore not simply, “Can my VoIP provider connect to GoHighLevel?”

A better question is: “Which parts of my current phone system do I want HighLevel to manage?”

How the HighLevel Phone System Works

HighLevel’s native phone environment is commonly referred to as LC Phone. Some agencies also operate locations connected to their own Twilio environment.

HighLevel now supports physical VoIP deskphones as SIP endpoints. Its current documentation states that compatible deskphones can be connected directly to HighLevel for inbound and outbound calling, with features such as call recording, call transfers and call transcription continuing to work with the CRM. See HighLevel’s deskphone documentation.

That makes several architectures possible.

Three Common HighLevel Phone Architectures
FULLY INTEGRATED
HighLevel as the phone system
Business Number → HighLevel / LC Phone → IVR or Voice AI → Team Member → SIP Deskphone / App → CRM → Workflow
HYBRID
Keep the current carrier
Existing VoIP Provider → Existing Number → Call Forwarding → HighLevel → Voice AI / Team / Workflow
HOSTED MESSAGING
Split voice and messaging
Existing Number → Voice stays with carrier + eligible SMS/MMS routes through HighLevel

There is no single architecture that is best for every company.

The 4 Main Ways to Connect VoIP With GoHighLevel

4 Ways to Connect VoIP to GoHighLevel
Choose the model based on how much of your current phone system you want HighLevel to manage.
01
Forward Calls
Keep your existing provider and forward selected calls into HighLevel.
02
Use Existing Caller ID
Place eligible outbound HighLevel calls using a verified number you already own.
03
Hosted Messaging
Keep voice with the current carrier while eligible SMS/MMS runs through HighLevel.
04
Port the Number
Move the number into HighLevel for the deepest phone + CRM integration.

1. Forward Your Existing VoIP Number to HighLevel

This is usually the simplest way to start.

Suppose your business already has a number that customers know and your current provider is RingCentral, TELUS Business Connect, 8x8, Dialpad, Ooma, Bell, Rogers, VoIP.ms or another carrier.

Instead of changing that number immediately, you can configure the existing provider to forward inbound calls to a HighLevel-managed number. The customer still calls your normal business number.

Call Forwarding Flow
Customer
Existing Business Number
Existing VoIP Provider
HighLevel Number
IVR / Voice AI / Team

Best for gradual migration, after-hours AI, overflow, and missed-call coverage.

This approach is particularly useful when:

  • You are not ready to replace your existing provider
  • You want to test HighLevel Voice AI
  • You want AI to answer after-hours calls
  • You want an overflow or missed-call destination
  • You want a gradual migration
  • You do not want to disrupt a number customers already know

A practical example is a medical or dental clinic that keeps its current business phone system during office hours but forwards unanswered or after-hours calls to a HighLevel Voice AI agent.

2. Use Your Existing Business Number for Outbound HighLevel Calls

In July 2026, HighLevel documented support for placing outbound voice calls using a phone number the business already owns. See HighLevel’s existing-number calling guide.

A sales team may be able to make calls from HighLevel while displaying a verified existing business number, even before purchasing or porting a dedicated HighLevel number.

Important distinction
This is not the same as porting the number. Your original provider may still control inbound calls, the underlying voice service, SMS, voicemail, PBX/extension functions, ownership and billing.

HighLevel’s existing-number calling feature is therefore best viewed as an outbound calling option, not a complete carrier migration.

3. Keep Voice With Your Existing Provider but Move SMS/MMS Into HighLevel

HighLevel’s Number Hosting feature creates another useful hybrid option.

For eligible numbers, the business can keep voice service with the existing carrier while routing SMS/MMS through HighLevel.

Voice + Messaging Split
Existing Business Number
Voice → Existing Carrier
SMS/MMS → HighLevel
Conversations
Workflows
Automated Follow-Up

Eligibility and messaging compliance requirements apply.

HighLevel’s current Number Hosting guidelines state that most eligible U.S. and Canadian landline and toll-free numbers can potentially be used for hosted messaging, subject to eligibility and verification requirements. See Number Hosting guidelines.

Important limitations apply. Mobile numbers are not eligible for this hosted-messaging model, and the number generally cannot already have SMS enabled with another provider in a conflicting configuration.

4. Port Your Business Number Completely Into HighLevel

If your goal is to make HighLevel the primary phone environment, porting may be the cleanest long-term approach.

Number Porting — Before & After
BEFORE
Current setup
Business Number → Existing Carrier / VoIP Provider
AFTER
After porting
Same Number → HighLevel → Users + Routing + Voice AI + Messaging + CRM

Porting transfers the number from the old carrier to the new phone environment.

HighLevel supports porting eligible non-Twilio numbers into a HighLevel location, but the exact process depends on the number, country, carrier and destination phone environment. See HighLevel’s porting guide.

Critical migration rule
Do not cancel, release or disconnect the old phone service before the port is confirmed complete. Keep the previous carrier active until inbound, outbound, routing, messaging and required features have been tested.

Can You Connect a Physical VoIP Deskphone Directly to GoHighLevel?

Yes.

HighLevel supports compatible open-SIP VoIP deskphones as direct SIP endpoints. Its current recommended-device examples include:

  • Yealink T54W / T58W
  • Poly VVX 450
  • Grandstream GXP2170
  • Snom D785
  • Cisco 7841

HighLevel also recommends avoiding carrier-locked or proprietary-provisioning devices.

How to Connect a SIP Deskphone to HighLevel

  1. Open the correct HighLevel sub-account.
  2. Navigate to the phone settings. Depending on the interface version, this may appear under Settings → Phone Numbers or Settings → Phone System.
  3. Open Advanced Settings and locate VoIP Deskphone (SIP).
  4. Select Get Started.
  5. Confirm or configure the SIP domain.
  6. Create the SIP user/device.
  7. Choose an extension.
  8. Create a strong SIP password and store it securely.
  9. Assign the device to the correct HighLevel user.
  10. Configure that user’s Call & Voicemail Settings so the deskphone is enabled for the desired call-routing options.
  11. Log into the physical phone’s admin interface.
  12. Enter the SIP domain/server, username and password supplied by HighLevel.
  13. Save the configuration and allow the handset to register.
  14. Test inbound calling.
  15. Test outbound calling.
Network note
HighLevel’s deskphone requirements include SIP signalling and RTP audio access. Restrictive office firewalls can affect registration or audio.

A SIP Phone Is Not the Same as a SIP Trunk

This distinction is essential.

✓ SIP Endpoint

A compatible individual deskphone registers directly to HighLevel.

Deskphone → HighLevel
✕ SIP Trunk

Do not assume an outside PBX or carrier SIP trunk can connect directly to HighLevel.

PBX → SIP Trunk → Other Platform

HighLevel’s physical deskphone feature is designed around SIP endpoints. You should not assume that an existing Asterisk server, 3CX PBX, RingCentral environment, VoIP.ms SIP trunk, Telnyx trunk or another outside PBX can simply be connected directly to the HighLevel deskphone SIP domain.

Can RingCentral, TELUS, 8x8, Dialpad and Other VoIP Providers Work With GoHighLevel?

In many cases, yes — but “work with” can mean different things.

A provider may support one or more of the following:

  • Call forwarding into HighLevel
  • Keeping the existing number during migration
  • Using a verified existing number for outbound HighLevel calls
  • Porting the number into HighLevel
  • API or webhook-based CRM synchronization
  • Hosted messaging, if the number is eligible
  • Reprovisioning compatible unlocked deskphones directly to HighLevel
Provider Practical HighLevel Use
RingCentral Forwarding, staged migration, porting, API/custom integration
TELUS Business Connect Forwarding, after-hours Voice AI, staged migration, porting
8x8 Forwarding, overflow routing, staged migration
Dialpad Forwarding plus custom/API workflow opportunities
Ooma Office Simple forwarding and eventual migration
GoTo Connect External routing/forwarding and staged migration
net2phone Forwarding plus API opportunities depending on product/account
VoIP.ms DID forwarding and API possibilities; not a direct GHL SIP trunk
Microsoft Teams Phone External forwarding and selected API/workflow scenarios
Quo / OpenPhone Forwarding, APIs and staged migration
Aircall Forwarding plus strong API/webhook opportunities
CloudTalk Forwarding plus API/HTTP workflow opportunities
Nextiva External forwarding and staged migration
Vonage Business Forwarding plus API options depending on product
Zoom Phone Forwarding and API/webhook possibilities
MightyCall Forwarding and migration options
Rogers Business Forwarding or porting; exact steps depend on product
Bell Business Forwarding or porting; exact steps depend on product
Telnyx Strong API/webhook and PSTN routing; not a native GHL carrier
Twilio Special case: HighLevel supports locations connected to their own Twilio environment

We are publishing dedicated setup guides for the major providers because the exact connection steps and limitations vary by platform.

What Can API and Webhook Integrations Add?

Some businesses want to keep their existing telephony provider while making more of the call data visible inside the CRM.

Depending on the provider, a custom integration may be able to synchronize caller/recipient details, direction, status, duration, agent, disposition, recording URL, voicemail events, contact information and follow-up status.

External VoIP → HighLevel CRM Workflow
External VoIP Call
Provider Webhook
Integration Layer
Find / Create Contact
Update CRM Activity
Trigger Workflow
SMS / Email / Task

This can be valuable, but it is important not to confuse data integration with telephony integration. Logging a RingCentral, Aircall, CloudTalk or Telnyx call into HighLevel does not automatically make that provider the carrier used by the native HighLevel dialer.

Where Voice AI Fits Into a GoHighLevel Phone System

HighLevel Voice AI can be deployed as part of an inbound call flow. According to HighLevel’s current inbound-routing documentation, a Voice AI agent can answer calls directly or act as a backup after the normal routing flow is not answered. See HighLevel’s inbound routing guide.

Three Voice AI Routing Models
MODEL 1
AI Answers First
Incoming Call → Voice AI → Understand Intent → Answer / Qualify → Transfer or Book → CRM Workflow
MODEL 2
Humans Answer First
Incoming Call → Team Rings → No Answer → Voice AI → Handle or Escalate
MODEL 3
IVR + Team + AI
Incoming Call → IVR → Department → Team → No Answer → Voice AI / Voicemail

For businesses interested in this approach, Magno Voice AI is LeadMagno’s managed AI voice solution built around automated call handling and CRM follow-up.

The Bigger Advantage: Connecting Calls to the CRM

Replacing one phone provider with another is not necessarily transformational. The bigger opportunity is connecting the call to everything that should happen next.

From Call to Automated Follow-Up

Pipeline Updated
Follow-Up Continues

That is where phone-system integration becomes much more valuable than simple dial tone.

If your business is still relying on spreadsheets, manual reminders or disconnected inboxes, our CRM automation for small businesses guide explains how workflows, pipelines, triggers and follow-up can work together.

Should You Replace Your Existing VoIP Provider?

Not necessarily.

For some companies, keeping RingCentral, TELUS Business Connect, Dialpad, Teams Phone, 8x8 or another established phone platform may still make operational sense. HighLevel can become the CRM, automation or AI layer around that system.

For other organizations, moving more of the communication stack into HighLevel can reduce complexity and connect customer conversations directly with workflows and pipelines.

The right choice depends on your users, call volume, contracts, deskphone requirements, call-centre needs, SMS requirements, international calling, APIs, redundancy, compliance, AI strategy and total cost.

The decision question
Which architecture gives this business the best combination of reliability, customer experience, automation and cost?

GoHighLevel VoIP Integration FAQs

Can GoHighLevel work with an existing VoIP provider?

Yes. In many cases, the existing provider can forward calls to a HighLevel number while additional API, caller-ID, hosted-messaging or migration options may also be available depending on the provider and number.

Can I keep my existing business number?

Potentially. You may be able to keep the number with your current carrier, use it as a verified outbound calling number in HighLevel, host eligible messaging separately, or port the number completely into HighLevel.

Can I use a physical office phone with GoHighLevel?

Yes. HighLevel supports compatible open-SIP VoIP deskphones, including documented examples from Yealink, Poly, Grandstream, Snom and Cisco.

Do I need Twilio to use HighLevel calling?

Not necessarily. HighLevel supports its LC Phone environment, while some locations may also be connected to their own Twilio environment.

Can HighLevel answer calls with AI?

Yes. HighLevel Voice AI can answer inbound calls directly or work as a backup after the human/team routing flow is not answered.

Can I use my existing number for SMS in HighLevel?

Eligible U.S. and Canadian landline and toll-free numbers may qualify for HighLevel Number Hosting, where voice remains with the existing carrier and SMS/MMS is handled through HighLevel. Eligibility and compliance requirements apply.

Can I connect my existing PBX to HighLevel with a SIP trunk?

Do not assume so. HighLevel’s physical deskphone capability is based on individual SIP endpoints. A SIP-capable deskphone is not the same thing as an outside PBX or carrier SIP trunk.

Should I forward or port my phone number?

Forwarding is usually better for testing, overflow, Voice AI or gradual migration. Porting is generally better when you are ready to make HighLevel the primary phone environment.

What happens to my phone system during a port?

Keep the old carrier active until the port has been confirmed complete. Once complete, test inbound/outbound calls, routing, messaging and other required features before cancelling the previous service.

Turn Your Business Phone Into Part of Your Sales System

A business phone should not operate as an isolated tool.

Every call represents a prospect, customer, appointment, support request or revenue opportunity.

LeadMagno helps businesses connect calling with CRM automation, AI-powered call handling, messaging, calendars, pipelines and follow-up workflows so customer communication becomes part of a connected sales and service system.

Already using RingCentral, TELUS Business Connect, 8x8, Dialpad, Ooma, Microsoft Teams Phone, VoIP.ms or another business phone provider? You may not need to replace it immediately.

LeadMagno can help assess your current setup and determine whether call forwarding, a hybrid integration, Voice AI, hosted messaging, API synchronization or a complete migration makes the most sense.

Not sure which setup fits your business?
