WeSolve Daily Trend Show | Google Ads & AI
Google Ads AI Max can expand search matching, adapt ad text and select landing pages when relevant features are enabled. Here's how businesses can keep those decisions aligned with actual customers—not just clicks.
AI can automate ad decisions. Can it judge your lead quality?
Google Ads is introducing more AI-powered capabilities into Search campaigns. With AI Max, advertisers can use search term matching, text customization and Final URL expansion to help reach additional searches, adapt ad creative and route people to relevant pages. Exactly which capabilities apply depends on the campaign configuration.
Automation can save time and uncover opportunities, but an increase in clicks does not automatically mean an increase in qualified customers. Businesses still need to inspect where traffic came from, what people were promised and where they landed.

Before AI spends your budget, check these three things.
Our October 23 episode shows why advertisers should review search terms, ad headlines and destination pages.
What Google Ads AI Max actually does
AI Max is a collection of optional AI-powered enhancements for eligible Google Search campaigns, rather than a separate type of campaign. Its core capabilities include:
- Search term matching: broadening the range of potentially relevant searches beyond an advertiser's original keyword coverage.
- Text customization: using campaign and website information to adapt ad headlines and descriptions.
- Final URL expansion: selecting a potentially more relevant page on the advertiser's site when that feature is enabled.
Not every campaign enables every feature, and advertiser controls still matter. The useful question is not whether AI is involved, but whether the campaign's automated choices support the business objective.
Why more clicks don't necessarily mean more customers
Consider a hypothetical business selling premium marketing services. Its ideal customer wants an agency or consultant. Now imagine an ad appearing for the search “free marketing tutorials for beginners.” That person may be looking for education rather than a paid service.
The click might still cost money while contributing little to a lead-generation objective. This is an illustrative scenario, not a documented example of an AI Max campaign making that specific mistake. Informational searches are not universally bad; their usefulness depends on intent, funnel strategy and measured outcomes.
Three checks to make before trusting automation
1. Review your search terms
Inspect the Search terms report and relevant AI Max reporting. Look for searches that indicate a mismatch between the offer and searcher intent, as well as searches that produce actual qualified inquiries. Review available negative-keyword controls when genuinely irrelevant themes recur.
2. Review the headlines people see
Check ad assets and any Google-created text. Do the headlines accurately describe your services, pricing approach and promise? A premium service should not be framed as a free offer unless that offer exists. Use available asset reporting and controls to address unsuitable creative.
3. Review the landing pages receiving clicks
When Final URL expansion is active, inspect landing-page reporting. Ensure the destination matches the query and ad, explains the service clearly and offers a relevant next step. Review URL controls and exclusions where appropriate.
Which Google Ads reports should you open?
| Report or view | What to check |
|---|---|
| Search terms | Actual reported queries, relevance and outcomes |
| AI Max-related search term details | How expanded matching contributed to traffic, where available |
| Asset reporting | Headlines and descriptions, including available AI-created assets |
| Landing pages / URL reporting | Destinations selected and whether pages match intent |
| Conversion reporting | Qualified actions, not merely traffic volume |
Interface labels, available dimensions and controls can vary by campaign and feature rollout. Check current Google Ads Help documentation for the setup in your account.
Measure business results, not just ad activity
For a service company, more impressions and clicks matter only if they advance a meaningful objective. Track qualified inquiries, booked consultations, purchases or other verified actions. Make sure conversion events reflect real business outcomes: a contact-page view is not the same thing as a successfully submitted lead form.
Before comparing automated versus other campaign strategies, establish a baseline, verify tracking and allow for appropriate testing. No specific improvement in conversion rate or return on ad spend can be guaranteed.
Should Canadian small businesses use AI Max?
The decision depends on campaign goals, budget, available performance data, landing-page quality and the time available for oversight. A Calgary service company and a national e-commerce business may require different query controls and conversion definitions.
Start by identifying the AI Max features enabled for your campaign, then review their traffic and conversion impact. If your measurement is unreliable, fix that first rather than assuming the automated campaign is performing well.
