WeSolve TrendCheck | Local SEO & Online Visibility
BrightLocal's 2026 research reveals a gap between how confident small-business owners feel about being found online and how consumers actually discover businesses. Here's what that means—and what to do next.
Are customers finding your business—or just your competitors?
A website is a starting point, not proof that your business appears when a potential customer searches. Your Google Business Profile, search visibility, accurate information, reviews, and mobile experience all influence whether people discover and contact you.
BrightLocal's 2026 Small Business Marketing Report offers an instructive comparison. The findings come from research involving U.S. businesses and consumers; they should not be presented as Canadian-specific estimates.

Why these findings matter
The 71% figure describes Google as part of the customer search journey. The 22% finding describes which channels business owners identify as their strongest sources of new customers. A customer can find a company using Google, investigate reviews, and eventually contact it by phone or another channel. That makes attribution more complicated than asking where the final inquiry came from.
The practical takeaway is to measure discoverability at each stage. Businesses should assess which services they appear for, whether their information is trustworthy, and how easily customers can reach them once they arrive.
Seven ways to improve online visibility
- Search for your service plus your location. Try “accountant Calgary” instead of your brand name. Remember that search results vary by location, device, and user.
- Audit your Google Business Profile. Check category, hours, services, contact information, photos, service areas, and website link.
- Compare local competitors. Review the visible information, customer questions, freshness of reviews, and usefulness of their websites.
- Improve your service pages. Clearly explain what you do, where you operate, and why customers should trust you. Avoid duplicate location pages with little unique value.
- Build a compliant review process. Invite honest reviews without incentives for positive ratings, and respond professionally to feedback.
- Make mobile conversions easy. Test call buttons, booking forms, load speed, and contact details.
- Measure more than rankings. Track Search Console queries, qualified contact forms, calls, and booked appointments to see what actually improves.
A five-minute visibility check
- Do you appear for non-branded searches relevant to your services?
- Is your Google Business Profile complete and accurate?
- Do your service pages answer common customer questions?
- Are recent, authentic reviews easy to find?
- Can a mobile visitor contact you without friction?
What about Canadian small businesses?
BrightLocal's survey percentages describe U.S. research; they are not Canadian market statistics. Still, the diagnostic questions are useful for businesses in Calgary and across Canada: Can people find your services, evaluate your reputation, and take the next step?
